Last Prisoner Project
Merrick Brian Garland is an American attorney and jurist, who President Joe Biden nominated for the position of United States Attorney General.
He recently said, in reference to cannabis prosecutions:
“Here’s a non-violent crime with respect to usage that does not require us to incarcerate people, and we’re incarcerating at significantly different rates for different communities. That is wrong, and it’s the kind of problem that will then follow a person for the rest of their lives. It will make it impossible to get a job and it will lead to a downward economic spiral for their family.”
In the United States, police make a cannabis-related arrest every 58 seconds. Year after year, these arrests outnumber the arrests for all violent crimes combined. More than 90% of these cannabis-related arrests are for simple possession.
At THISHIPCITY, we all share the same belief, which is that all non-violent cannabis prisoners should be released – especially those who were prosecuted in states where it has now been legalized.
This is why we have chosen to support Last Prisoner Project.
Last Prisoner Project is a non-profit organization made up of attorneys, criminal justice reformers, advocates and justice-impacted individuals.
Members of their advisory board include Jim Belushi, Melissa Etheridge and two of Bob Marley’s sons – Damian Marley and Stephen Marley.
Through intervention, advocacy, and awareness campaigns they are working to redress the past and continuing harms of unjust cannabis laws and policies.
It is a daunting task, but one that is so critical. We are proud to be able to contribute to an organization that is at the front of the pack in the fight to free cannabis prisoners.
